Landfill Diversion and Using Waste as a Resource

At Cheaper Bin Hire our focus is on landfill diversion and turning waste into a resource.

We do this by separating recyclable materials from waste, so that it can be turned into a new resource and used again. This creates a loop of recycled materials that flow back into the economy to be used again, for civil works, infrastructure projects, landscaping, residential and housing projects.

Waste is collected and brought back to our facility, it is then sorted and separated into groups according to the type of material.

We currently divert the following materials from landfill…
  1. Garden waste and cuttings are recovered and sent on to a specialist facility to create compost that can be used in garden and landscaping projects.
  2. Building materials such as bricks and concrete are crushed to create a material that can be used in building and civil projects and is then distributed through various methods
  3. Scrap metal - steel is the world’s most recycled material. Scrap metals can be recycled and used again for an indefinite period, so recycling is undertaken for both economic and environmental reasons. Our scrap metals are separated from waste and sent to Norstar Steel Recylers.
  4. Timber products are separated and sent to Bark King who take pride in using recycled timber to produce a range of Longalife® coloured mulches and recycled timber mulches.
  5. Soil is cleaned by a process of sifting through a trommel screen that allows the clean soil to fall through and the end product can be reused for landscaping and other civil works.
We estimate our diversion rate, the rate of materials that are diverted from landfill, at 70-80% which means that less that only around 1/4 of the waste we handle ends up in landfill. We are achieving these great results by using practices which align with the Victorian Government Circular Economy goals, including Goal 3 - Recycle more resources.

A Circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. In this way, the life cycle of products is extended. In practice, it implies reducing waste to a minimum.
